Heathers (1989)

Heathers was a 1989 black comedy film directed by Michael Lehmann and produced by Denise Di Novi from a screenplay by Daniel Waters.
It starred Winona Ryder (Veronica Sawyer), Christian Slater (Jason "J.D." Dean), and Shannen Doherty (Heather Duke). (I guess Robert Downey Jr was busy at the time).
Of course the film was a U.S. box office failure, or it probably wouldnt be on this blog. BUT, it's become a true cult classic, with high DVD sales and rentals.
The movie is about four girls, three named Heather, that rule a suburban Midwestern high school through intimidation, contempt, and sex appeal.

The writer of Mean Girls, Tina Fey, considers Heathers "the hardcore version of Mean Girls."
Veronica Sawyer and Betty Finn are named after Betty and Veronica from the Archie comic and Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn.

The Heathers that ALMOST was.....
Heather Graham was offered the role of Heather McNamara.
Jennifer Connelly and Justine Bateman were both considered for the role of Veronica Sawyer
Brad Pitt auditioned for the role of J.D, but was turned down because he was "too nice".
